In 1995, J.K. Mahal went on summer vacation to Key West, Fla. She returned to California two-and-a-half years later a journalist. Between covering missile defense testing as a politics reporter and Cuban folk artists as a features editor at the Key West Citizen, she found her calling as a writer. J.K. has also designed papers for Times Community News, city edited the Huntington Beach Independent, talked with painters, poets and jazz singers for the Newport Beach Daily Pilot, and written about equestrian culture and mariachi for the San Diego Union-Tribune.

From 2004 to January 2007, she served as publicist for the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa, helping them open their new concert hall. In 2010-11, she helped to launch the UC Santa Cruz Center for Games and Playable Media, working as their publicist.

She is currently at work on book one of a three ebook series. The first novel, Walking in the Dark, will be available in 2014. She also writes and illustrates children’s books under the name Jenni Kaye. Her first ebook, All Hallow’s ABC, was published in October 2012. It went to a print run in 2013.
