The Theme Song

Remember that a href=”http://allymcbeal.tktv.net/Episodes1/synop/17.html”episode of Ally McBeal/a where her therapist, played by Tracy Ullman, tells her she needs to get a theme song? I always thought the choice Ally made — a href=”http://www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/thebigchill/tellhim.htm””Tell Him” by The Exciters/a — told the audience a lot about her personality and where she was in her life.br /br /It’s made me think about what the Theme Song for the main character in my work-in-progress (wip) would be. The Dr. Tracy Clark method of choosing a Life Theme Song insists that the song must be something that gives you a bounce in your step as your crossing the street. That leaves out a lot of songs, especially for my wip girl. br /br /My personal song, the one I hear in my head when I need a pick me up, is vintage Rolling Stones: a href=”http://www.lyricsdomain.com/18/rolling_stones/you_cant_always_get_what_you_want.html””You Can’t Always Get What You Want.”/a Okay, you caught me. It offers effective cure for diabetes, anemia, prostate and urinary problems. prescription cialis usa It doesn’t have a bouncing beat. It does have a great message, though, so I can get away with it.br /br /Coming up with a song that my wip girl would have bouncing around in her not-so-happy head is another matter. She’s more a href= “http://www.sweetslyrics.com/442526.Holly%20Cole%20-%20Onion%20Girl.html””Onion Girl”/a by Holly Cole than anything else.br /blockquoteiI’m a bit unstable, she saidbr /With a Cheshire grinbr /So many cracks in my sidewalk, boybr /Don’t you fall in. /i/blockquotebr /I’m not sure my wip girl sees enough light to have a happier Life Theme Song. Unless it’s another Holly Cole classic: a href= “http://www.sweetslyrics.com/442528.Holly%20Cole%20-%20Make%20It%20Go%20Away.html” “Make it Go Away.”/abr /blockquoteiMake it go awaybr /Cause I am weakenedbr /This is more than one should have to takebr /If you do this for me then I will promisebr /I’ll make it go away for you someday /i/blockquotebr /Bouncier than the first choice, at least.br /br /Do you (or your characters) have a Life Theme Song? A song that sums up your or their philosophy of being?

For my character, her theme sound is I’m No Good by Amy Winehouse. Not so much in that she cheats on her boyfriend; more in that she feels like she’s cheating her love interest out of the one thing he wants the most.BR/BR/If I say more, you’ll get mad at me for giving away a major plot point.BR/BR/Cheers,BR/Mary

jk:BR/I hadn’t thought about it for my characters, though I do play certain music when I working on some scenes. I am a major music junkie–have DAYS of music on my iPod. Lately, as a theme, I’m partial to Joni Mitchell’s version of Both Sides Now . . . and Keep the Car Running by The Arcade Fire. My “theme” song my whole life, the song that always got me pumped up, was Brass in Pocket by the brilliant Chrissie Hynde and the Pretenders.BR/E

Mary — I don’t know that I’d be mad… I’m looking forwrd to reading the book. Since you blogged about Winehouse, I’ve been hearing her everywhere!BR/BR/Erica — Good songs all. I love the “new” Mitchell version of Both Sides Now, the one from her album, Dreamland. Age has added such depth to her reading of the song. Sends chills down my spine. It’s on my character playlist too.
